In Celebration of Archives Month (October) and Electronic Records Day (10/10)
Hawai`i State Archives presents: Social Media Archiving is Achievable

Dr. Adam Jansen will discuss the steps Hawai`i State Archives is taking to capture and preserve the official social media accounts of state government. He will also highlight tools the Hawai`i State Archives is using and discuss some of the gaps encountered between the Archives’ legal obligations and the capabilities of social media platforms.

Core Competencies: Information Technology, Risk Management, RIM/IG Practice

Social media has become an essential part of many people’s lives as a way of sharing our experiences and checking in on our friends and `ohana. It’s become such a casual and pervasive part of our lives that we often forget the business impacts of using social media for work. As creators and managers of information, social media is part of our kuleana. The fact that it is hosted by third-party platforms does not alleviate us of that oversight.

Dr. Adam Jansen, serves as the State Archivist administering the public archives, records management, and digital archives programs and facilities with full responsibility for:

  • Directing the appraisal, acquisition, preservation, arrangement, description, reference service, and accessibility for State government’s permanent records and other historical material in a central repository.
  • Advising and assisting state agencies in the preparation of retention and disposition schedules for government records, providing records management training and technical assistance services to agencies, and operating a centralized records storage warehouse for non-current, non-permanent state records.
  • Managing the Hawai`i state digital archives to ingest and preserve state agency electronic records in a digital archive following national standards to create a sustainable digital preservation program ensuring long-term access to usable and understandable electronic records. Creating and implementing a public search interface and tools; updating and migrating the system to the next emerging technologies to ensure these records can always be read and remain accessible to the public.
