Developing a good records management or archival access system is a key component of any successful digitization program. Helen Wong Smith recently became the University Records Archivist at UH Manoa. Earning degrees in Hawaiian Studies and MLIS from the University of Hawai’i, she has held numerous positions in Hawai’i, including Librarian/Archivist at the State Historic Preservation Division, Executive Director of the Kaua’i Historical Society, Hawaiian Collection Librarian at the University of Hawai’i Hilo and lead archivist for the Pacific Island Network of the National Park Service. For more than 30 years, she has managed and established analog and digital data collections in the state to adhere to national and professional standards. Elected as President of the Association of Hawai’i Archivists, the Hawaiian Library Association and the Hawaiian Historical Society she has been a Certified Archivist since 2000 and made a Distinguished Fellow of the Society of American Archivists in 2016. She has been an ardent fan of ARMA since attending a meeting in 1990 and integrates records management into workflows.
